Canker Sore on Tonsil: Relief Tips and When to See a Dentist

Canker sores on the tonsils can feel more painful than those elsewhere in the mouth. They make swallowing difficult and may even mimic symptoms of a sore throat. While many heal on their own, recurring or severe cases require attention.

Here’s what you should know about causes, remedies, and when it’s time to see a dentist.

Canker Sore on Tonsil: Relief Tips and When to See a Dentist

Why They Hurt So Much

Normal canker sores can be a bit uncomfortable, stinging when food touches them. However, tonsil canker sores are often unbearable, causing immense discomfort.

Because of their location, tonsil canker sores are constantly irritated by swallowing, speaking, and eating. They make swallowing your food, or even water, a painful ordeal. This makes them feel more painful compared to sores elsewhere in the mouth.

Possible Causes

Triggers of tonsillar canker sores include food sensitivities, hormonal changes, stress, and illness. Even everyday toothpaste ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can increase the risk for some patients.

Home Remedies for Relief

Eventually, most canker sores on tonsils heal on their own, but there are ways to promote healing and reduce discomfort in the meantime.

To clean the area without irritating, try a gentle saltwater mix. Combine salt with warm water, and swish in the back of your throat to disinfect and soothe. A spoonful of honey is another simple remedy that many find soothing.

Watching what you eat is also important. Steer clear of spicy or acidic foods, as these will cause more irritation and pain.

When to Seek Professional Care

If a sore lasts more than two weeks, is unusually large, or occurs repeatedly, it’s time to seek professional care. Dentists can recommend treatments to speed up healing and prevent frequent outbreaks.
