The Truth About Brushing Your Teeth After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom tooth extraction is a common dental recommendation for many patients. Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come in, and they tend to appear in our teenage/adolescent years.

By the time wisdom teeth come in, your other teeth are already set in their position. The additional molars (which are not needed) can cause overcrowding, damage to the neighboring teeth, and pain. For these reasons, wisdom tooth extraction is a common procedure.

After getting your wisdom teeth removed, you may feel significant soreness and discomfort. Because of this, many patients hesitate to brush their teeth right away.

When can you brush your teeth after wisdom teeth removal?

In this article, we’ll address this question as well as how to brush teeth after wisdom tooth extraction.

The Truth About Brushing Your Teeth After Wisdom Teeth Removal

When to Start Brushing Your Teeth After Wisdom Tooth Removal

Sometimes, wisdom teeth are removed before they erupt, or when they are still impacted. They may also be removed when partially or fully irrupted. Regardless of when your wisdom teeth are removed, the procedure can cause some significant swelling and discomfort. While your mouth is still tender, brushing may seem frightening.

The American Dental Association does not recommend brushing near the extraction site on the same day as wisdom tooth surgery. However, they do recommend that you begin regular brushing by the next day. Brushing is critical for keeping your back molars and the healing site clean and healthy.
